SunRail Service Suspended as Hurricane Milton Nears Central Florida

As Hurricane Milton advances toward Central Florida, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is suspending SunRail operations starting on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. The suspension is expected to last through at least Thursday, October 10, pending an assessment of the storm’s effects.

In preparation, crews are securing the railway corridor with a series of safety measures, including:

• Fastening railroad gates at 129 crossings along the 61.5-mile corridor, with the removal of extended gates for added protection
• Inspecting and storing the entire SunRail train fleet
• Safeguarding all rail equipment throughout the corridor

Once the storm has passed and conditions permit, FDOT will conduct a thorough inspection to evaluate any storm-related damage. This assessment will support the safe resumption of services, which includes reinstalling gates, clearing any debris from the tracks, and performing comprehensive safety checks before reopening for SunRail, freight, and Amtrak operations.
